Gaming @ LPLS

Still think the library is a quiet place full of dusty books? Think again! Today's library is a technologically advanced social hub and a community meeting center. And thanks to a federal grant, your local library is now also a spot where you can challenge your friends to Rock Band or Dance Dance Revolution, an alternative for low-impact fitness, a place to practice puzzle-solving skills, and a resource where your family can learn more about gaming systems.

From August 2009 through Summer 2010, Linebaugh and Smyrna Libraries will offer a series of gaming programs geared for teens (ages 12-18), seniors (ages 55 and older) and families (all ages). These programs are being presented in partnership with the Rutherford County YMCA and the Smyrna Senior Center, with assistance from our Teen Advisory Board. These programs are offered thanks to a $5000 Community Building Through Video Games in Libraries grant, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library and Services Technology Act, administered by the Department of State, Tennessee State Library and Archives. The intent of the grant is to promote lifelong learning and literacy in the library through video game programs, while raising awareness about library services.

Come join us at the events below to get your game on. At Linebaugh and the YMCA, we'll be featuring games on the Nintendo Wii and playing on a 96" widescreen inflatable screen. At Smyrna, we'll be playing games on the Nintendo Wii and Playstation 2 using a 32" LCD HDTV or on our projector screen.
