Make a Splash - Read!Summer Reading Program
Make a splash this summer - read! Our annual Summer Reading Program runs June 1 - July 23. All ages -- from toddlers to adults -- are invited to read books and earn rewards! Plus we'll host lots of free special events, including story-tellers, singers, magicians, animal visits, craft workshops, and many other surprises. We also have a reading program just for teens.

 

Good Men Who Won the War coverCivil War Discussion Group

Between the Lines: Reading about the Civil War is a book discussion group focusing on Civil War-related literature and biography. In July the group will meet at the Heritage Center, 225 W. College St., to discuss The Good Men Who Won the War: Army of the Cumberland Veterans and Emancipation Memory by Robert Hunt. A book discussion will be held on July 15, at 7 p.m. On July 22, 7 p.m., the group will host a Q&A with author Robert Hunt. Sponsored by the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area, Linebaugh Library, and the Heritage Center of Murfreesboro the group meets in June and January. Gaming @ the Library
Library Gaming
From August 2009 through Summer 2010, Linebaugh and Smyrna Libraries will offer a series of gaming programs geared for teens (ages 12-18), seniors (ages 55 and older) and families (all ages). These programs are being presented in partnership with the Rutherford County YMCA and the Smyrna Senior Center, with assistance from our Teen Advisory Board. Our next program will be: All-Ages Gaming - July 17, 12:30-4:30 p.m., all ages. Try out the new Lego Harry Potter! Gardening Series

The LPLS Gardening series is devoted to nature, gardening, plants, vegetables, and more. Join us at 10 a.m. on July 17, when we will discuss hardscapes. Participants should bring a pencil and paper. Classes will be held once per month at one of the LPLS branches. Each month a Master Gardener from the area will discuss a different topic and answer gardening questions.  All classes are free and open to the public; no advance registration is required.

 

Elders First

Linebaugh Library will host a presentation about Elders First, a day care program for adults in Murfreesboro. Executive Director Tina O'Brien will be at the library on July 27, 2-3 p.m., to talk about the services available to seniors and their families. Elders First provides family caregivers with relief so that their loved ones with memory loss or other functional impairment may continue to live at home. Elders First accepts persons age 55+ who are able to follow simple directions. This program is free and open to the public; refreshments will be provided.

 

The Play's the Thing!The Play's the Thing!

Like theater? The Play's the Thing!, a new play reading group, will meet 1-4 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month. (Note the new date & time.) The purpose of the group is to provide an opportunity for people interested in dramatic literature to be exposed to a wide variety of contemporary and classic works written for the theater. Participants will select a play script to read aloud as a group and briefly discuss afterwards. Everyone is welcome to read or simply listen as they choose. We will meet again on August 14. Participation is free and open to anyone who is interested. Refreshments will be available. Join our Facebook group for updates.

 

Book Discussion Groups

Linebaugh Library offers several different book discussion groups. No matter what type of book you like to read or when you're available to meet, we've got you covered! Click on the group names below to see the books we'll be reading in 2010. Groups meet in the library's Board Room, on the second floor. Want a reminder of what our book clubs are reading each month? Computer Classes
Computer classes will resume after the summer. All classes are on a first come, first served basis. For more information or to see the schedule, please visit our new Computer Classes page.

 

Rutherford Writers INK

Rutherford Writers INK meets two Saturdays a month from 10 a.m. until noon in the Linebaugh Library Board Room. Rutherford Writers INK is a forum for writers to come together and express themselves, to share ideas and support, as well as to gain constructive feedback on their work. Upcoming meeting dates are:  July 17, August 7, and August 21.

 

Teen Tuesdays
The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is now sponsoring Teen Tuesdays. Teens are invited to come to the library on Tuesdays, 4:30-6:30 p.m., for a different activity each week.
Programs this summer include workshops on drawing, writing, and making comic books, plus Wii gaming, a discussion of the book Hunger Games. We'll also hold TEENprov and Young Authors @ Linebaugh Library meetings. Visit our teens page for more information.

 

Services for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing

Linebaugh Public Library, in partnership with the League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, now offers services for the deaf and hard of hearing. A sign language interpreter is available at Linebaugh Public Library 3:30-6:00 p.m. each Wednesday to assist with: interpreting phone calls, help interpreting documents, help on computers, help finding information in the library, help finding local resources. During July, the hours will change to 2:30-5:00 p.m. Interpreter Jaclyn Kollar is also available by appointment on Mondays, 12:30-2:30 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 615-887-0446. Other services provided by the library include: access to IP-Relay on public Internet computers and captioned movies and other DVD video recordings.
