Summer Reading Program

Frequently Asked Questions

Parrot With ReadWhy should I sign up for the Summer Reading Program?
Summer is a time to have fun, and we want you to have fun reading! It's a time to learn about new things and catch up on a favorite author. It's also a good time to see what other things your library has to offer.

When does the program start and end?
The program begins Wednesday, June 1, but you can sign up any day after that for the duration of the program. You can pick up your halfway prize after June 23, and your final prize after July 14. The program is officially over July 22. Smyrna Library will hold drawings for door prizes on July 26; winners will be notified by phone.

What ages can participate?
The Summer Reading Program is open to all ages -- even adults can participate. The Young Adult Summer Reading Program is open to those ages 12 to 18.

How do I sign up?
To sign up for the Summer Reading Program, go to the library of your choice and sign up in the Youth Services Department. You will be given a reading log where you'll record the books you read over the summer. Halfway through your reading goal, you'll receive prizes, just for reading. If you finish the program, you'll also receive a grab bag of goodies.

To sign up for the Young Adult Summer Reading Program, go to the Linebaugh or Smyrna Library and sign up in the Youth Services Department. Participants will be given a passport. Each time you complete a goal, come back to the library to get your passport stamped; goals include reading books and attending programs. Once you get enough stamps, you can turn in your passport to claim your grab bag and you will be entered in our grand prize drawing.

How many books do I have to read?
To get credit, read or listen to the required number of books (on your reading level or above). Audiobooks, graphic novels, and e-books also count. No videos allowed.

Preschool - Kindergarten 30 books
Grades 1 - 3 20 books
Grades 4 - 6 10 books
Young Adult (ages 12-18) See Young Adult program.
Adult 6 books

Will I need a library card?
Yes! A library card is your all-access pass to great books, audiotapes, and books on CD that count toward your summer reading fun. There is no age restriction to get a card, but if you're under 18 we will need your parent's signature and identification showing your current address.
