Summer Reading Program

Frequently Asked Questions

Make a Splash - Read! Why should I sign up for the Summer Reading Program?
Summer is a time to have fun, and we want you to have fun reading! It's a time to learn about new things and catch up on a favorite author. It's also a good time to see what other things your library has to offer.

When does the program start and end?
The program begins Tuesday, June 1, but you can sign up any day after that for the duration of the program. You can pick up your halfway prize after June 24, and your final prize after July 15. The program is officially over July 23.

What ages can participate?
The Summer Reading Program is open to all ages -- even adults can participate. The Young Adult Summer Reading Program is open to those ages 12 to 18.

How do I sign up?
To sign up for the Summer Reading Program, go to the library of your choice and sign up in the Youth Services Department. You will be given a folder where you'll record the books you read over the summer. Halfway through your reading goal, you'll receive cool food coupons and other goodies, just for reading. If you finish the program, you'll also receive a grab bag of goodies.

To sign up for the Young Adult Summer Reading Program, go to the Linebaugh or Smyrna Library and sign up in the Youth Services Department. Participants will be given a booklet with a bingo card. Each time you complete a goal, come back to the library to get your card stamped. Once you get 5 spaces stamped (lined up in any direction), you can turn in your booklet to claim your grab bag and you will be entered in our grand prize drawing. (At Smyrna, participants can either complete a bingo card or can read and review five books.) Grab bags will be available after July 15; the grand prize drawing will be held on July 23.

How many books do I have to read?
To get credit, read or listen to the required number of books (on your reading level or above). Audiobooks, graphic novels, and e-books also count. No videos allowed.

Preschool - Kindergarten 30 books
Grades 1 - 3 20 books
Grades 4 - 6 10 books
Young Adult (ages 12-18) 5 books
Adult 6 books

Make a Splash - Read!Will I need a library card?
Yes! A library card is your all-access pass to great books, audiotapes, and books on CD that count toward your summer reading fun. There is no age restriction to get a card, but if you're under 18 we will need your parent's signature and identification showing your current address.
